Costumes, Props Go on Sale to Public

The Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., is giving the general public a chance to take home iconic costume pieces during the STC Costume Sale on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. in STC's Rehearsal Studios, 507 8th Street SE.

Noteworthy items from recent STC productions will be available for purchase. Garments include the Fairy Queen costume worn by Dol Common in STC's 2009 production of The Alchemist, the Three Goddesses' costumes from The Tempest in 2005, the Pork Heiress costumes from last season's The Heir Apparent, and togas from Julius Caesar in 2008. Additionally, STC will be selling the red ball gown worn by Dixie Carter in her final production at STC, Lady Windermere's Fan, in 2005. 

The costume shop will make available further unique costumes as well as bodices, doublets, armor, and other smaller pieces. Along with costumes, STC will be selling a variety of stage props. The collection will include an assortment of chairs, including many fur-covered beanbag chairs. Prices will range from $1 to more than $200.

“Most of the costumes are one-of-a-kind specialty pieces that had a prominent moment on stage with a specific character,” Costume Director Wendy Stark Prey said in a press release. “They are too unique to be used onstage again, so we will be able to sell them to the public for their enjoyment and support of the Shakespeare Theatre Company.”

She said that 95 percent of the costumes on sale were made by hand in the costume and craft shop. The collection features work by STC costume designers Elizabeth Clancy, Miranda Hoffman, Murell Horton, Jennifer Moeller, and Robert Perdziola, among other artisans.

Costume sales occur infrequently, so patrons are encouraged to seize this opportunity while they can. STC's last Costume Sale took place in 2009.

On  Friday, September 28, STC will host an exclusive preview sale and reception for Artistic Circle Members, those patrons who have donated $1,500 or more to STC. The reception will take place from 5:30–7:30 p.m.
